Shadow journaling is the practice of writing to uncover the parts of yourself you usually hide. The I Ching gives this practice a structure. Each of the 64 hexagrams is a door into a specific shadow territory — a pattern of denial, suppression, or disownment that the hexagram's energy illuminates. The following prompts are designed to be used one at a time. Cast the I Ching, receive a hexagram, and use the corresponding prompt as the starting point for a deep journaling session. Each hexagram reveals a different shadow, and each shadow carries a different gift.
The 64 Shadow Journaling Prompts
Hexagram 1 (The Creative). Where in your life are you holding back your creative power because you are afraid of the responsibility it carries?
Hexagram 2 (The Receptive). Where do you refuse to receive — help, love, abundance — because receiving makes you feel vulnerable?
Hexagram 3 (Difficulty at the Beginning). What have you abandoned at the first sign of difficulty, and what would happen if you persisted?
Hexagram 4 (Youthful Folly). What question are you afraid to ask because you think you should already know the answer?
Hexagram 5 (Waiting). What are you pretending to wait for when really you are afraid to act?
Hexagram 6 (Conflict). What conflict are you avoiding because you fear the confrontation — and what is the cost of this avoidance?
Hexagram 7 (The Army). Where have you given your power to a group or authority that does not have your best interests at heart?
Hexagram 8 (Holding Together). What relationship are you holding onto that has already ended — and what loneliness are you avoiding by clinging?
Hexagram 9 (Small Taming). Where do you restrain your small, daily impulses so strictly that you have lost all spontaneity?
Hexagram 10 (Treading). What truth are you walking carefully around, afraid that if you step on it directly it will explode?
Hexagram 11 (Peace). What surface peace are you maintaining at the cost of a deeper truth?
Hexagram 12 (Standstill). Where are you stuck because it is safer than moving forward into the unknown?
Hexagram 13 (Fellowship). What group do you belong to that asks you to hide a part of yourself to remain accepted?
Hexagram 14 (Great Possession). What do you possess — money, talent, status — that you are afraid to fully own?
Hexagram 15 (Modesty). Where do you use false modesty to avoid the responsibility of your true power?
Hexagram 16 (Enthusiasm). What passion have you suppressed because enthusiastic expression feels embarrassing or unsafe?
Hexagram 17 (Following). What are you following — a person, a path, a belief — that you have never critically examined?
Hexagram 18 (Work on What Has Been Spoiled). What family pattern are you repeating that you swore you would never repeat?
Hexagram 19 (Approach). What opportunity are you approaching with suspicion because past disappointments have taught you not to trust?
Hexagram 20 (Contemplation). What do you see clearly in others that you refuse to see in yourself?
Hexagram 21 (Biting Through). What obstacle requires a decisive, uncomfortable action that you keep postponing?
Hexagram 22 (Grace). Where do you use beauty, charm, or style to hide what you feel is ugly within you?
Hexagram 23 (Splitting Apart). What is falling apart in your life right now that you are trying to hold together?
Hexagram 24 (Return). What part of yourself have you abandoned that is ready to return — and are you ready to welcome it?
Hexagram 25 (Innocence). Where have you lost your natural, unguarded response and replaced it with calculated performance?
Hexagram 26 (Great Taming). What great power are you holding back because you are not yet ready to wield it responsibly?
Hexagram 27 (Nourishment). What are you feeding yourself — thoughts, media, relationships — that is actually depleting you?
Hexagram 28 (Great Exceeding). Where are you exceeding your limits in a way that looks noble but is actually self-destructive?
Hexagram 29 (The Abysmal). What deep fear have you never fully entered because you are afraid you will not find your way back?
Hexagram 30 (The Clinging). What are you clinging to that no longer deserves your light?
Hexagram 31 (Influence). Who are you trying to influence or impress, and what part of yourself have you sacrificed in the attempt?
Hexagram 32 (Duration). What commitment are you maintaining out of obligation when your heart left it long ago?
Hexagram 33 (Retreat). What would happen if you stopped pushing and allowed yourself to withdraw — even if it looks like failure?
Hexagram 34 (Great Power). What power do you have that you are afraid to use because you might hurt someone — or because you might succeed?
Hexagram 35 (Progress). What advancement are you blocking because success would trigger your fear of being seen?
Hexagram 36 (Darkening of the Light). What sadness have you not allowed yourself to fully feel?
Hexagram 37 (The Family). What role do you play in your family that is not who you actually are?
Hexagram 38 (Opposition). What quality in another person irritates you most — and how does that quality live in you, unacknowledged?
Hexagram 39 (Obstruction). What feels impossible right now — and is it truly impossible, or just deeply uncomfortable?
Hexagram 40 (Deliverance). What release are you postponing because the familiar prison feels safer than unknown freedom?
Hexagram 41 (Decrease). What loss have you not properly grieved, and how is that ungrieved loss depleting your present?
Hexagram 42 (Increase). What abundance are you blocking with unworthiness?
Hexagram 43 (Breakthrough). What truth has been building in you that needs to be spoken — even if it disrupts everything?
Hexagram 44 (Coming to Meet). What new influence is approaching your life that you are resisting because it asks you to change?
Hexagram 45 (Gathering Together). What community are you longing for but afraid to join because belonging means being seen?
Hexagram 46 (Pushing Upward). What next step do you clearly see but keep avoiding?
Hexagram 47 (Oppression). What story of powerlessness are you telling yourself that keeps you trapped?
Hexagram 48 (The Well). What inner resource do you know you have but refuse to draw from — because using it would mean you can no longer claim scarcity?
Hexagram 49 (Revolution). What identity are you ready to shed — and what is the fear that keeps you in the old skin?
Hexagram 50 (The Cauldron). What raw material in your life — a talent, a wound, a relationship — are you refusing to transform?
Hexagram 51 (The Arousing). What shock are you still processing that you pretend has not affected you?
Hexagram 52 (Keeping Still). What are you running from that stillness would reveal?
Hexagram 53 (Development). What growth process are you trying to shortcut — and what are you missing by skipping stages?
Hexagram 54 (The Marrying Maiden). Where are you settling for less than you deserve because you are afraid of being alone?
Hexagram 55 (Abundance). What fullness are you dimming because you have been taught that taking up space is selfish?
Hexagram 56 (The Traveler). Where do you feel like a stranger in your own life — and what would it take to come home to yourself?
Hexagram 57 (The Gentle). What truth requires gentle, persistent penetration rather than forceful confrontation?
Hexagram 58 (The Joyous). What joy have you postponed because you have not yet earned the right to it?
Hexagram 59 (Dispersion). What confusion are you hiding behind to avoid clarity — because clarity would require action?
Hexagram 60 (Limitation). What healthy boundary are you refusing to set because setting it would disappoint someone?
Hexagram 61 (Inner Truth). What lie are you telling yourself that, if you stopped believing it, would change everything?
Hexagram 62 (Small Exceeding). What small, excessive behavior — a habit, a worry, a compulsion — is actually a signal of a much larger imbalance?
Hexagram 63 (After Completion). What completed chapter are you refusing to close because you do not trust what comes next?
Hexagram 64 (Before Completion). What almost-finished project or relationship are you leaving unfinished because completion means facing judgment?
How to Use These Prompts
Cast the I Ching each morning with the question: What shadow wants to be seen today? Write the hexagram that appears. Then use the corresponding prompt above as the starting point for 10 minutes of free writing. Do not edit. Do not judge. Do not try to arrive at a neat conclusion. The goal is not to solve the shadow. The goal is to let it speak.
Over time, certain hexagrams will appear again and again. These are your core shadow patterns — the parts of yourself that most need integration. When you have received the same hexagram three times, spend an entire week with that shadow. Write about it from different angles. Talk to it. Ask it what it needs. The hexagram that keeps returning is the key to your deepest transformation.
