Understanding Hexagram 48 – The Well (Jǐng)
2026-06-17
Daily Guidance
Hexagram 48, also known as The Well (Jǐng / 井), represents the energy of inner resource, shared sustenance, and the deep source that nourishes a community. Its image is wood below water — a bucket descending into a well, drawing up what sustains life. When this hexagram appears in your reading, it suggests that the resources you need are already present — within you, within your community, within the structures you have built. The Well is not about finding something new. It is about accessing what is already there but may have been neglected. The water is deep and pure. The question is whether you are willing to lower the bucket.
Key aspects of Hexagram 48:
- Energy: Resourceful, deep, communal, sustaining
- Action: Return to your inner source. Draw from what has always sustained you. Share what you have with others
- Warning: A well that is not used becomes stagnant. Your gifts and resources need to be shared to stay alive
In the I Ching, The Well follows Oppression (hexagram 47). After the pressure of limitation, you discover that you have depths you did not know were there. The well was always present — you simply had to dig deep enough to reach it. This hexagram reminds you that your true resources — wisdom, creativity, resilience — are never depleted. They only need to be accessed and shared.
Reflection Exercise
To integrate the guidance of Hexagram 48 into your daily practice:
- Name Your Well — What is the deepest source of nourishment in your life? A practice, a relationship, a belief, a creative outlet, a quiet place? Name what sustains you at the deepest level.
2. Check the Bucket — Are you drawing from your well regularly? Or have you been running on surface energy — busyness, distraction, external validation? The well asks you to return, not to find something new.
3. One Act of Drawing Water — Today, spend intentional time at your source. Meditate, write, walk in nature, call someone who grounds you. Lower the bucket and let the water rise.
4. Weekly Check-In — How often did you return to your well this week? What did you find there? What are you called to share with others who may also be thirsty?
The energy of The Well asks you to trust that you are not empty. The source within you is deep and will not run dry. But you must return to it, again and again, not only for yourself but so that you may offer something real to the world. Draw deeply, share freely, and trust the well.
Conclusion
Hexagram 48 encourages regular return to your inner source, generous sharing of your depth with others, and trust that what truly sustains you is always available when you are willing to draw from it.
