The Eight Trigrams of the I Ching: A Complete Guide
2026-06-22
At the foundation of the I Ching lie eight three-line figures called trigrams (八卦, ba gua). Each trigram is a simple pattern of broken (yin) and solid (yang) lines. When two trigrams are combined — one above the other — they form one of the sixty-four hexagrams. Understanding the eight trigrams is the key to unlocking the deeper logic of the I Ching.
Here are the eight trigrams with their names, symbols, and essential meanings:
1. Qián (乾) — Heaven (☰)
Three solid yang lines. Represents creative power, initiative, strength, and the primal force of action. Heaven is the source of all movement and the energy of the new. As the lower trigram, it suggests inner drive; as the upper trigram, it suggests external authority or destiny.
2. Kūn (坤) — Earth (☷)
Three broken yin lines. Represents receptivity, nurturing, patience, and the power of devoted presence. Earth is the ground that receives heaven's impulse and brings it into form. As the lower trigram, it suggests inner steadiness; as the upper trigram, it suggests supportive circumstances.
3. Zhèn (震) — Thunder (☳)
One solid line below two broken lines. Represents arousing energy, sudden movement, and awakening. Thunder breaks the stillness and initiates change. It is the shock that wakes you from complacency and the creative disruption that clears the way for something new.
4. Kǎn (坎) — Water (☵)
One solid line between two broken lines. Represents danger, depth, and flowing adaptation. Water finds its way through the darkest chasm, adapting to every obstacle without losing its essential nature. It is the energy of perseverance through difficulty.
5. Gèn (艮) — Mountain (☶)
One solid line above two broken lines. Represents stillness, rest, and grounded presence. Mountain is the energy of stopping — not from fear but from the wisdom of knowing when to be still. It is the meditative pause between actions.
6. Xùn (巽) — Wind (☴)
One broken line below two solid lines. Represents gentle penetration, subtle influence, and the power of persistence. Wind is invisible but irresistible, finding its way into every opening. It is the energy of soft but unstoppable influence.
7. Lí (离) — Fire (☲)
One broken line between two solid lines. Represents illumination, clarity, and conscious awareness. Fire gives light and warmth but depends on what it consumes. It is the power of seeing clearly and the vulnerability of being dependent on what sustains you.
8. Duì (兑) — Lake (☱)
One broken line above two solid lines. Represents joy, open expression, and the pleasure of authentic connection. Lake is water held in a receptive basin — joy that arises from being fully present and connected to others.
Each hexagram in the I Ching is formed by stacking one trigram on top of another. The lower trigram represents the inner world — your core energy, motivation, and private experience. The upper trigram represents the outer world — circumstances, social dynamics, and manifest expression. Together, they create a complete picture of a situation in motion.
For example, Hexagram 1 (The Creative) is Heaven above Heaven — pure yang energy doubled, representing the fullest expression of creative power. Hexagram 11 (Peace) is Earth above Heaven — the receptive ground receiving the creative impulse, creating harmony and flourishing.
Learning the trigrams gives you a powerful lens for understanding any hexagram at a glance. When you encounter a hexagram, look first at the upper and lower trigrams: What is the relationship between inner and outer? Is there harmony or tension? Is the energy moving upward or settling downward? These questions will guide you to the heart of the hexagram's meaning.
Spend time with each trigram. Draw them. Meditate on their qualities. The eight trigrams are not abstract symbols — they are the fundamental energies of nature and human experience. Understanding them is the first step to reading the I Ching with depth and confidence.
