The Line

Interpretation

The change already indicated in the middle of the hexagram has arrived. The city wall sinks back into the moat out of which it had come. Calamity breaks in. In this case one must submit to fate and not try by violent resistance to hold fate back. The only thing that remains is to preserve oneself within the narrowest circle. Were one to persist on the usual path in resisting the evil, the collapse would only become worse, and humiliation would be the consequence.
