Hexagram 2 · Line 3

The Receptive三六

Kun · San Liu

三六 · San Liu

The Line

Hidden lines; one is able to remain persevering. If you should enter the service of a king, seek no works, but bring them to completion.

Interpretation

If one is free of vanity, one is able to conceal one's merits so that they do not prematurely attract public attention. In this way one can mature in stillness. When circumstances require it, one may step forward into public view, but even then with restraint. The sage is willing to leave fame to others. They do not seek accomplished facts that will be credited to them as achievements; rather, they hope for effective causes, that is, they complete works in such a way that they will bear fruit for the future.
