Hexagram 39 · Line 2

Obstruction二九

Jian · Er Jiu

二九 · Er Jiu

The Line

The king's servant is in obstruction upon obstruction. But it is not his own fault.

Interpretation

While normally one best skirts around the obstruction and seeks to overcome it along the line of least resistance, there is nevertheless one case in which one must go to meet difficulty, even if difficulty piles upon difficulty: namely, when the path of duty leads one there, so that one cannot act from free resolve, but has the duty in the service of a higher cause to seek out the danger. Then one may do it, and in so doing be wholly at peace inwardly, because one has not entered into this difficult situation through one's own fault.
