四九 · Si Jiu
The Line
No blame. Without passing by, he meets him. To go there brings danger. One must be on guard. Do not act. Be lastingly persevering.
Interpretation
The hardness of character is tempered by the softness of the position, so that one makes no mistake. One is in a situation in which one must hold back to the utmost. One may from oneself undertake nothing in order to meet the desired. And if one wanted to go forth in order to reach one's goal by force, one would come into danger. Therefore one must be on guard and not act, but lastingly preserve inner perseverance.
